It seems like every gamer considers things like story and graphics and multiplayer to be the most important components of a good video game, when the game part seems to get left behind.
For instance, I love to play a good shooting game. Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, and Gears of War are amongst my favorites. But out of those, Gears is the longest, and it's a little over 10 hours on your first playthrough. Really? Ten years ago, ten hours was considered too short. Now, it's considered just right. The gameplay is great in these games, but it just doesn't last. Multiplayer does not, in any way, shape, or form, make up for a short game. No game should need to stand on multiplayer alone. I don't care if it's Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament, it ought to be against the law to concentrate on multiplayer.
So, in my quest to find a long game well worth my hard earned money, I bought (over a period of a few months) Fallout 3, both Mass Effects, Oblivion, and I'm looking at Dragon Age. Never before has an RPG held my interest, but that's because I’ve always associated RPG with "stand in a line and take turns punching each other with a menu button." This concept was one I hated, and still do, but the WRPG's that I've got are immersive, interesting, and expansive. But the actual game parts are still a bit lackluster. Out of all of them, only Mass Effect 2 could really work without any story or dialogue. I'm also having a hard time calling ME2 an "RPG" with a straight face, more like a story driven third person shooter. The "take cover" style of game play just doesn’t work anywhere near as well as it does in Gears 2. It isn’t bad, by any means, but if you’re going to rip off a game you might as well go all the way, and ME2 only half-heartedly does it. In Gears, you can roll away, crouch and run, crouch in cover, and the camera swings to the right or left of your character depending on where and how you are aiming. ME2 doesn’t have any of this, only the basic “back against the chest-high wall” maneuver.
What I’m saying is that nowadays, games are too focused on the “other stuff”. I’d like a game that’s as long as Oblivion, as polished as CoD4, controls as well as Gears 2, has a story as expansive and interesting as Mass Effect, and just drops any thoughts of “multiplayer” whatsoever. Any suggestions, and who agrees?
Sorry for the incredibly long question. I have one more - Is Dragon Age turn-based at all?|||1. Halo: CE had the best story of the three primary Halo games and those you mentioned in the first paragraph. I understand that it's an arguable point, but I'm speaking from a strictly structural point of view.
2. Campaigns in video games are getting shorter because the plots in the stories are more interesting and, as such, need to be more condensed to maintain pacing and flow.
3. Agreed, multiplayer does not define the game experience. You should understand, however, that the casual gamer is the largest demographic to play video games and the competitive gamer is the largest demographic to purchase games when they are first released. Highlighting good multiplayer is a marketing tool, as well as an extension of a game's primary function.
4. The cover system employed by Gears and ME2 was pioneered by an underappreciated game called KillSwitch, which was then revolutionized by Ubisoft for Rainbow Six: Vegas. Gears is by no means original and ME is not copying Gears. RS:V2 was far more successful than either of those games. Cliff Bleszinski said himself he took inspiration from RS and made the cover system more like a game of paintball, which multiplayer strongly represents: People hiding behind cover until some one hacks you to bits with a chainsaw
5. A game can't have everything. I don't think, and hundreds of thousands of other people will agree with me, that a game like Oblivion is incomplete or lacking in any way. MW2 certainly has multiplay failings, and the character in gears 2 doesn't move quickly enough in multiplayer for my tastes. There are plenty of single player games out there that are interesting and have multiplayer, like MW2, RS:V2, and Gears 2, that don't hurt the experience of the story. Halo: Reach and ODST are great examples. Just don't let the multiplayer bother you.
6. I never experienced turn-based strategy in DA, and I don't believe it was ever marketed as such.|||Whether the game stands on multiplayer, partially or alone, is dependent on what the game is. Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2 are amazing games. They are great games that are multiplayer. If you haven't played L4D 1-2 or TF2, you are cheating yourself out of fantastically balanced game play either in co-op or versus.
I'm not entirely certain what you mean by "actual game parts" or the notion that a game like Mass Effect 2 or any RPG would need to be judged without dialogue or story. RPG's are about telling stories. Games, though defined by interactivity, are frequently considered vessels for telling stories. If you don't want story, play Tetris. Or pong.
Gears of War did not invent cover systems, and utilizing a common mechanic does not mean that you are trying to rip off another game, or that you did not do it as well.
If you have trouble calling Mass Effect 2 an RPG with a straight face, that might be indicative of that fact that you do not know what an RPG is:

Huh. Sounds an awful lot like taking on the role of Commander Shepard. Choosing Paragon, Regegade or neutral resolutions to various situations in-game to progress a narrative. Also, it has the common RPG elements of customization, party and equipment configuration.
No, Dragon Age Origins is not turn-based. Yes, it is an RPG. Lots of the aforementioned mechanics will be present. Not alot of ducking behind cover and shooting things.|||If you buy Civilization V and set it on the right length, it could take days, if not weeks. Oh and If you are hoping for a FPS with no multiplayer? :) Good luck!
HAHAHA|||I agree to an extent, but I think you're just a bit too picky lol. To me, the Mass Effect games aren't supposed to be like the Gears games. They're two TOTALLY different type games, and the "take cover" aspect isn't all that important in Mass Effect. And you can't completely drop multiplayer, but I get what your saying. But just think about Halo without multiplayer. It wouldn't be Halo. Sure, I'd like a better campaign gameplay, but multiplayer is SO much more important in a game like that. That's why people play it, because they wanna get together with their friends (whether it be in person or online). If they could package all those things into a game, that'd be awesome I'd definately buy it, but game makers focus on multiplayer because that's what appeals to the majority of gamers nowadays.|||That may be your opinion. There are plenty of games that don't involve multiplayer if you don't want to use it. Multiplayer, and specifically online Muliplayer and MMORPG ensure that people will play the game for longer periods of time without moving on, so that game and console companies can make money from subscriptions and DLC.
Another part of it might also be that nowadays, Game Worlds are more open and have a lot more Eye Candy than they did long ago. There's more to explore, do, and see.

Which laptop is better for gaming?
I'm planning on buying a laptop, probably one of these two. Which one in your opinion is better for playing Dragon Age: Origins and for gaming in general? Either of these should be enough I think but I'm not really an expert. I also have some doubts about the GPU.
I know that a desktop is better for gaming but I can't get one for several reasons.

Which would you buy? (Computer or laptop question)?
I've been wanting a new laptop/computer for a while now and have a computer and a laptop that I'm stuck with. I just can't choose which to buy. As I have a small bedroom, putting the computer in would be hard work, but it is rather good. I'm not sure If the laptop would come anyway near the computer? I'm wanting to use it for gaming, like Rome: Total War, Dragon Age: Origins and MMO's like LOTRO and Star Wars: Old Republic etc and obviously general internet uses, Facebook/Tumblr etc. At the moment I have a nice little Toshiba (Perfect for internet browsing and some games but it couldn't handle Dragon Age 2. I will still keep this laptop though.

What would be the best choice of Graphics Card?

My graphics card isn't as high-end as I would like. I will be upgrading it, and would like some advice.
My price range will be anywhere from $100 to MAYBE $300. And my requirements are such: Runs high-end, and other ones, PC games at max-quality, with ZERO screen-lag. High FPS. Now, games I'm talking about are, ones like Mass Effect 1%26amp;2, Bioshock, Fallout 3, World of Warcraft, Left 4 Dead 2, Dragon Age Origins, Team Fortress 2, etc. And supports at least DirectX 10. MAYBE 11, since I heard news of that being way better than 10? But 11 support might jack the price up, so I don't know.
A card I have been looking at is the Radeon HD 4850. Now keep in mind, I don't know a whole lot about graphics cards. Just looking for the performance that I have always desired in my computer.
Also, it might be required of my PC to upgrade either my RAM or Processor, though I doubt it. Intel Core 2 Duo at 2.66GHz, and 2gigs of RAM. Might I need a better processor/more RAM?|||I have the ATI 4870X2 2GB, I have to say its impressive, but you need a cool running case to handle it.
I would suggest you get more ram if you MB can take it.|||I have a core 2 duo 2.8 and 4 gigs of ram. After alot of research 6 months ago I picked up a 9800 GTX+ 1 GB for about $180 (I think $150 nowadays) and the poor thing SCREAMS fast at 1920x1080 with even the best games. Plus it works with mac os x (a personal bonus to me). Check out its reviews!
Oh, and get your stuff at newegg. Its super cheap and has never let me down.|||For less than $200 you can get an nVidia GTX 260 card. These are high end video cards with GDDR3 memory, and will allow your game choices to play without pause. If you buy this card and you see lag, pause, or delay; it won't be from the video. You do however need an available PCI-e slot on your motherboard.|||ATI Radeon HD 4890 my friend : ) you wont be sorry, thats a promise. Happy gaming.

HP dv6tse or Dell Studio 15?
I am looking at buying a new laptop for college and am stuck between two different configurations from HP and Dell. I will mainly be using this laptop for web browsing and typing up assignments but I am also a light gamer (I play Sims 3 and Dragon Age: Origins) so I need decent graphics as well. Here's a link to a benchmark of WOW running 2-way SLI with a GTX 580 vs. a single GTX 580. Adding a 3rd card would probably get you just a few more extra FPS.
Normally, you would see a 50%-90% performance boost by adding a second card. With WOW you're getting 30% at the most. Also, you will never visually see the difference once you go over 60FPS. A single GTX 580 is giving you 100FPS on a 2560x1600 monitor, that's impressive.

O.o|||OMG THATS WAY OVERKILL LIKE REALLY I NEVER SEEN SOMEONE WILLING TO SPEND THAT MUCH MONEY ON A PC. Oh and don't buy from IBUYPOWER or CYBERPOWER because they are bull. They sent me their computers with broken parts, a lot of it not plugged in, and overall they tried to keep my money. Once again, OVERKILL I built my pc for $1000 and it runs all new games fine. Although, I would get that beast machine, it would last years and years without having to be upgraded!
New: He only needs one SSD, Video card, and monitor, but who gives a crap, IT OWNS. Although, I really would go with one monitor. No need for more then 1 as then theres black lines in between each game.|||Holy cow that is the ultimate computer setup. Looking for a PC game which is hard and relentless, but fun and rewarding.?

I've looked at thread after thread on similar topics elsewhere, but have struck no mother lode in terms of actually finding a game. So, here's what i'm seeking:
1. Something similar in genre to Demon's Souls - action RPGs, that sort of stuff.
2. Something which requires a fair amount of reflex, skill and coordination - blocking at the right times, dodging, etc.
3. Something which doesn't offer an easy way out and is ruthless - for instance, dying causes you to lose everything you have, etc.
4. If there is a combat system, it should be fun. Demon's Souls is fun - it's open combat.
5. TROLLSTORM INCOMING: Decent graphics. Story gameplay blah blah, but every game released now-a-days has decent graphics, and in this the gaming market has instilled a standard which i seek and require. I'm not saying graphically older are BAD - just that i won't ENJOY them as much. So i want gameplay + GRAPHICS (possibly story, but DS didn't have much of that.)
Based on these criteria, and personal preference, the following games are ruled out:
1. World of Warcraft - why would anyone suggest this? I don't know, but i've seen it as a response to other threads. NO WAY. Played it, got bored. GRIND GRIND GRIND. LK + Cata take away any difficulty, so on so forth.
2. Vindictus - seen this one offered before. Was fairly fun to play, but just didn't have the ruthlessness of DS. Everything aside from SOME bosses was more or less a walk in the park. Furthermore, there are restrictions on competition with other players, instilled by the donator shop that Nexon is so proud of. The one who has the largest bank account wins, generally.
3. Dragon Age (Origins or 2) - Playing it right now and finding that while the story is immersive and interesting and combat is complex and requires strategy and coordination, it's just not for me. Yes, the combat meets the criteria - but it's hardly relentless and challenging. Pause, get a cup of tea, browse the Argos catalogue and queue up some orders. I'm not looking for all out hack'n'slash gameplay, but atleast something closer to that than Dragon Age.
4. Diablo (1 or 2) - Played and completed both (1 was far more challenging than 2, which really shows the way games are going in terms of difficulty.) Yet again, the combat isn't quite suiting to what i'm looking for - too much button smashing and not much timing or perfection required. When you get to a high level the game becomes an easy-*** faceroll and repetitive grinding.
5. Morrowind/Oblivion - played both. Far too open-ended to instill me to do anything at all or progress with the storyline. Enemies become easy-*** faceroll too quickly. Modding can improve this drastically, but i found myself much more involved with looking for b etter and better mods than actually PLAYING the game.
6. Any NWN, Baldur's Gate, blah, blah, blah. Rpg? Yes. What i'm looking for? NO.
Don't start arguments over why i'm wrong. This is my personal preference; I've sucked all the joy i can from these games, and they just don't fit into what i want anymore.
So... challenging, relentless, fun %26amp; rewarding, active and skill-requiring. FOR PC, NOT CONSOLE. If any of you millions of people can quench my thirst for this elusive game, i will metaphorically grant you the title 'Winner of Life'. And give you best answer. ;)|||Have you tried 'The Witcher' or the sequel when it comes out this year or even Dynasty warriors, not sure how that plays on a PC, but with the difficultly ramped up it could pose the challenge you are looking for.|||Personally, I'd say assassins creed. 5. Morrowind/Oblivion - played both. Far too open-ended to instill me to do anything at all or progress with the storyline. Enemies become easy-*** faceroll too quickly. Modding can improve this drastically, but i found myself much more involved with looking for b etter and better mods than actually PLAYING the game.
6. Any NWN, Baldur's Gate, blah, blah, blah. Rpg? Yes. What i'm looking for? NO.
Don't start arguments over why i'm wrong. This is my personal preference; I've sucked all the joy i can from these games, and they just don't fit into what i want anymore.
So... challenging, relentless, fun %26amp; rewarding, active and skill-requiring. FOR PC, NOT CONSOLE. If any of you millions of people can quench my thirst for this elusive game, i will metaphorically grant you the title 'Winner of Life'. And give you best answer. ;)|||Have you tried 'The Witcher' or the sequel when it comes out this year or even Dynasty warriors, not sure how that plays on a PC, but with the difficultly ramped up it could pose the challenge you are looking for.|||Personally, I'd say assassins creed. Part1, but especially part2. (there's also a part3, but I haven't played it yet) Good story, nice game play and not to easy.|||this doesn't really meet most or any of your criteria but have you ever tried the myst series.check them out and see what you think.if i have wasted your time im sorry.hope this helps.|||metal gear solid 4 because it is the best game with the best story, and character development and is challenging if you play on hard mode, having to play without being caught, you get rewarded with new weapons and other things.
Also, try sports games, a cricket simulation or football game.
